AMHERST COMMUNITY ACUPUNCTURE
Engaging Vitality Fundamentals Series

Engaging Vitality is a palpation-based approach to the practice of Traditional East Asian Medicine (TEAM) that engages those traditions and concepts through touch. We learn to trust the information we receive through our hands and let our patients’ bodies guide our treatment and diagnosis.
Engaging Vitality is the practice of learning to answer all of these questions through palpation, and most importantly,
making our treatments as helpful to our patients as they can be.
We use Osteopathic manual listening techniques to dig into our TEAM framework of Qi, Yin, Yang, Channels, Fluids, Zangfu, and Extraordinary Vessels, allowing these concepts, that otherwise can remain abstract in our medicine, to become tangible.
-
How can we feel and experience Qi?
-
How can we assess the channels?
-
How can we identify active or “live” acupuncture points?
-
How can we assess the relative activity of the Qi and Yang Qi regionally and in the 3 Burners?
-
How can we explore the connection between the various symptoms our patients present with, and which need to be treated first, and with which channels?
-
How can we know which of the many tools and approaches of TEAM are right for this patient right now?
-
How can we know when we have done enough with our treatment?
-
And how can we know how to avoid doing too much treatment?

Fundamentals Course
Series
2025 In-Person Fundamental Series in Amherst, MA:

All weekends taught by Jack Radner with Susana Byers

-
9/20/2025 - 9/21/2025 (2 days): Module 1
-
10/18/2025 - 10/19/2025 (2 days): Module 2
-
11/14/2025 - 11/16/2025 (2.5 days): Module 3

The fundamental course series consists of three modules, each module building directly on the previous one. Each of the 3 courses is a prerequisite for the next. Modules are paced to allow for depth of learning, building on skills from the course that came before, allowing ample time to practice skill sets, and opportunities to learn how to integrate these skills into your practice to improve clinical efficacy.

To afford extensive hands-on practice with direct supervision, class size is limited.

-
In Modules 1 and 2, participants learn to practice assessing the Qi, the Yang Qi, and active acupuncture points by assessing diagnostic changes in the body's motions, rhythms, discrete temperature changes, and areas of restriction. These EV methods are the core of this palpatory approach to TEAM, and lead to greater appreciation of the dynamics of Channel Pathways and physiology, greater efficacy with one's TEAM treatments, and real-time feedback on the body's response to treatment.

-
In Module 3, we will show how these diagnostic aids can deepen our understanding, improve our ability, and learn to assess the body's yin aspects; the Body Fluids, Yin and Blood, as well as beginning to enter into a palpatory relationship with the Extraordinary Vessels.
